LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Gov. Mike Beebe has called lawmakers back to the Capitol this week to consider an increase in funding to the state's teacher insurance program to lower premium hikes that are set to take effect next year.
Beebe issued a proclamation Wednesday convening a special session to address the rate hikes. The session will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, with lawmakers set to take up five measures.
Beebe announced earlier Wednesday he decided to call the session after legislative leaders said they had more than enough votes to pass measures aimed at lowering the premium hikes. The measures call for using $43 million from the state surplus this year and redirecting state funding in subsequent years toward the insurance program.
The additional funding will lower rate hikes to 10 percent.
