JONESBORO, Ark. (A-State) - The Arkansas State volleyball team defeated in-state opponent UAPB 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-12) in its last non-conference match of the season Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

A-State (11-13) jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set after a Mallory Warrington service ace and used a 9-3 run, powered by three Jessica Heuertz service aces, to stretch the lead out to 16-5. UAPB (8-19) got within 22-12 after a kill, but a 3-0 run by A-State, capped by a Markie Schaedig service ace clinched a 25-12 set victory and 3-0 match win for the Red Wolves.

"We struggled at the beginning of the match, but give credit to UAPB for playing us tough," A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said. "We can't afford to get off to a slow start against the conference opponents we have coming up. I'm pleased with the win tonight and hope this helps our confidence heading into the second round of conference play."

Sadie Clark led the Red Wolves with 11 kills and Sarah Kemp was second on the team with 10 of her own. Warrington handed out 16 assists to lead A-State, while Jackie Gerig added eight assists. Defensively, Megan Baska recorded 18 digs, while Kemp and Kelsey Sullivan each had two blocks a piece.

In the first set, the score was tied 6-6 before used a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 advantage on a Clark kill. Arkansas-Pine Bluff got within one point at 21-20 on a kill before A-State recorded two straight points to earn a 23-20 edge. UAPB tied the set at 23-23 after a quick 3-0 rally that forced an ASU timeout. After the timeout, Kendal Davis recorded a kill to give the Red Wolves a 24-23 lead and a block assist by Kemp and Sullivan the next point gave A-State a 25-23 set victory.

Holding a 1-0 advantage, the Red Wolves raced out to a 7-2 lead in the second set after an Arkansas-Pine Bluff attack error. UAPB responded with a 9-3 run to take an 11-10 lead after a block and forced ASU to call timeout. After the timeout, A-State came back with an 11-3 run to set the score at 21-14 after a Heuertz service ace. UAPB got as close as 23-17 before a service error and attack error gave the Red Wolves a 25-17 game two victory.

The Red Wolves are back in action Friday, Oct. 25 as they take on conference foe UT Arlington. The match begins at 7 p.m. in the HPESS facility on the A-State campus.
