BAKERSFIELD, CA (CNN) -- The average size litter for boxer dogs is five to seven puppies and the highest record set was 15 puppies. Just the other day, Sasha from southeast Bakersfield, California nearly broke this record.

A couple months ago the Fernandez family noticed their less-than 1-year-old boxer, Sasha, was pregnant and this weekend, it was time for her to welcome her pups into the world. Al Fernandez said, "My mom called us and she told us that she was in the dog house and she wasn't coming out."

The family was looking forward to having a few new additions. But they had no idea what they were in for. Al said, "And then we found out in the morning we had fourteen puppies."

Lily Fernandez said, "It's amazing, it's wonderful, they are so vulnerable that they have my heart."

Sasha almost set a world record for boxer breeds. Unfortunately one puppy did not make it and another one is sick, but they are trying to nurse it back to health, leaving 12 healthy and squirmy puppies.

For how tiny the puppies are they have quite the appetite, getting fed every two hours, some by Sasha and others by bottle. Their eyes aren't open yet, but we were able to count out eight girls and five boys.

The Fernandez family says they're exhausted, but wouldn't trade this feeling for the world. Al said, "This was something we wanted to share with the community 'cause we haven't seen something like this."

Sasha is recovering slowly but surely. The Fernandez family says that once the puppies are old enough they plan to sell them, but will keep the last one born for themselves.
