FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - The University of Arkansas baseball team began official practices for the 2014 season Friday.

The Razorbacks conducted a two-hour workout inside Baum Stadium on the first day of NCAA-allowed team practices in preparation for their Feb. 14 season opener.

After practice, head coach Dave Van Horn spoke about working outside with temperatures in the 30s and consistent winds of up to 20 miles per hour.

"It was quick," Coach Van Horn said. "It was about an hour and a half. It's pretty brutal down here. It's not bad for the first 15 to 20 minutes. That wind kicking up makes it a little rough to throw. But, we got a lot of work in. We moved around. It was organized. The kids were obviously happy to be out here playing baseball."

Coach Van Horn also addressed how the team's upcoming scrimmages this weekend, which are scheduled for noon Saturday and Sunday inside Baum Stadium and are open to the public, will be a measuring stick for hitters and pitchers.

"We're going to try to do two short scrimmages this weekend, so we should be able to figure it out a little bit," Coach Van Horn said. "I think that from what I've seen, the hitters are getting along pretty well for this early in the season. We face some live pitching tomorrow. I think it'll tell us what we need to work on."

Arkansas opens its 2014 season Feb. 14 at home against Appalachian State. The Razorbacks and Mountaineers play a three-game weekend series with game times of 3:05 p.m. Friday, 12:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
