SHERIDAN, Ark. (KTHV) - A teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a former student of hers pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the charge against her. Stephanie Bradshaw, 29, faces Class A Felony of Sexual Assault in the First Degree charge involving a former student.
According to an affidavit, the juvenile said he and Bradshaw began a sexual relationship his 9th grade year, in August 2011, the year after she taught him in middle school. The teen's story is that he found his phone number in Bradshaw's cell phone while he was her student; he then texted himself from her phone so he would have number. The teen stated he did not contact Bradshaw until the beginning of the next school year, when he began flirting with her and requesting she pick him up from his home. He said a few weeks passed until she agreed to pick him up. He said he went to her home "3 or 4 times" for sexual intercourse with her and eventually said it needed to stop because he had a girlfriend.
The girlfriend said she found facebook messages between Bradshaw and her boyfriend; when the boy told her about the relationship, she broke up with him. The teen then began contacting Bradshaw again, saying they exchanged photographic text messages of a racy nature and had intercourse again. When they heard rumors at school of their relationship, they decided to end it.
When Bradshaw was questioned about the incident on Dec. 13, 2013 - the day after school authorities learned of the alleged relationship - she denied any inappropriate behavior. Bradshaw did admit to having the teen's phone number, along with other students' numbers, in her phone but said she did not respond to the one text she remembered receiving from him. The teacher also said some of her students know where she lives but said none of them had ever been in her house at any time.
Phone records from Bradshaw and the juvenile's phones show that between July 1, 2012 and December 12, 2012, there were 18 calls made from his phone to hers; three calls made from her phone to his; and there were approximately 1,316 text messages exchanged between the two. Five multimedia text messages were shown to be sent from each of their phones to the other, but the content of those pictures could not be recovered.
According to the affidavit, officers said they did not interview anyone during the investigation that claimed to have direct knowledge of an inappropriate relationship between the two.
Bradshaw is on administrative leave with the school district; her next court date is scheduled for May 29. At the time of the charge, she was issued a $5,000 bond and ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.
