OMAHA, Neb. (SAU) - A trio of standouts on the Southern Arkansas baseball team have been placed on the initial 2013 Tino Martinez Award Watch List as it was released by College Baseball Lineup on Monday afternoon.
Among the Muleriders that have made the watch list are starting pitcher James Baune, outfielder Jason Dahl, and relief pitcher Justin Thomas.
Through the first couple of weekends of the season, Baune has a 1-1 record with a 3.38 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 13.1 innings. Dahl currently leads the team in hitting with a .519 average (14-of-27) with five doubles and three RBIs. Thomas, who sports a 1.23 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 7.1 innings, has saved four of the Muleriders' five wins so far this season and is now the all-time leader in career saves at Southern Arkansas.
The Tino Martinez Award, which is in its fourth year, is given annually by College Baseball Lineup to the Division II National Player of the Year, as it is voted on by a panel of Division II baseball media and coaches from across the nation.
Southern Arkansas has had one player advance to be a finalist for the award as former starting pitcher Hayden Simpson was runner up for the award in its inaugural year of 2010.
The 2013 watch list, which was compiled by initial nominations from sports information directors, coaches, and media members, is comprised of approximately 150 of the top players in Division II.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on May 6, 2013.
