MONTICELLO, Ark. (UAM) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team picked up a Great American Conference series victory over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at home after responding from a 13-1 loss in the first game to post a 9-7 victory in the series finale. UAM defeated OBU 7-3 in the series opener on Friday.

Saturday's first game mirrored the start of Friday's series-opener, but in reverse fashion. OBU scored five runs in the top of the first inning on just one hit. The Tigers drew three walks and scored three consecutive runs on bases-loaded hit batters.

OBU took a 6-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Chris Tavares before closing out the final two innings with seven unearned runs taking advantage of three UAM fielding errors.

UAM's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single from junior Ray Johnson to score sophomore Bronson Gillam, who singled to lead off the inning.

OBU starter Davis Ward (5-1) held UAM to just one run off four hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk in complete-game victory. UAM starter Kenny Marshall (1-2) suffered the loss after having control issues in the first inning. Marshall did not allow a hit, but allowed five runs after walking two and hitting three batters in less than an inning of work.

UAM bounced back in the second game using a pair of two-hit performances from seniors Danny Loya and Hunter Allday. Loya came off the bench and picked up an RBI double in the third, and followed that with a single in the fourth. Allday posted an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the third.

The Weevils plated the game's first eight runs with three runs in the second and five runs in the third, before OBU came back to within two runs with a six-run fourth inning.

UAM scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI pinch-hit sac fly from senior T.J. Cox to score junior Alex Lang, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second and third.

The Tigers finalized the game's scoring on a first-and-third double-steal in the top of the seventh.

Senior Brent Noble (4-1) picked up the win in relief after holding the Tigers to just one run off one hit with a strikeout and no walks in the middle three innings. Senior Eddie Smith recorded his first save of the year after getting the final three outs of the game, including a strikeout of OBU's Austin Watson in the final at bat. OBU's Keegan Ghidotti (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) off five hits with no strikeouts and two walks in the first two innings.

The schedule midweek game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday, March 12 has been cancelled. The next scheduled contests for the Boll Weevils are now next weekend (March 15-16) at home for a three-game GAC series against Arkansas Tech.
