LAKE CHARLES, La. - University of Central Arkansas freshman Brooke Cassar broke the stadium record Friday in winning the 10,000 meters on Day 1 of the 2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at McNeese State's Cameron Communications Track & Field Complex.
Cassar, from Woonona, New South Wales, Australia, crossed the finish line in a time of 36:12.47, breaking the stadium record set in 1994 by Texas-Arlington's Angela Nelson. Stephen F. Austin senior Lauren Smith finished second in her repeat bid, turning in a time of 36:43.52. Midday rain caused a five-hour delay in first-day events, but the day's other finals _ men's and women's hammer _ were able to finish. UCA senior Jasmine Ellis is the leader through four events of the women's heptathlon. She won 100-meter hurdles (14.18), high jump (5-4.25) and 200 meters (25.31) and was third in the shot put (35-11.25) to give her 3,175 points with three events to go. Her senior teammate, Megan Snow, is in second place with 3,026 points and Stephen F. Austin junior Shambrail Woods is third with 2,850 points.
UCA junior Amos Gerber of Hot Springs finished seventh in the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:09.70, while junior Edward Limo was 10th (31:44.71) and freshman Albert Maeder was 17th (33:23.24). McNeese State finished 1-2-5 in the event, with Daniel Rooney setting both meet and stadium records. UCA freshman Baykal Altiner finished 10th in the hammer with a throw of 132-10.
McNeese State leads both the men's and women's team standings through two events. The men have scored 28 points and are followed by Stephen F. Austin (16 points), Sam Houston State (14) and Lamar (11) among the teams that have double-figure totals after the opening day.
