DETROIT (Ark. St.) - Arkansas State junior bowler Sarah Lokker continued her busy summer Friday night with a runner-up finish in the Junior Gold Championships being held in Detroit, Mich. By finishing in the top six of the event, she assured herself a spot on Junior Team USA for 2014.
The top 16 finishers after 25 games bowled were placed in a double elimination, match play tournament. Lokker finished in 14th place with a score of 4,894 to qualify for the tournament portion. She won her first match by a score of 419-391 before falling in the second round 452-405 and moving to the elimination bracket. She pulled off five straight victories before falling in the final 386-339 and finishing runner-up.
"My coach was on me about my tempo all night," Lokker said. "I had to keep up my tempo and get my right. If my feet got off then I had a bad shot, but if my feet were right then it was a great shot. I'm so proud that I qualified to for Junior Team USA again. It's such an honor to represent my country."
A-State bowlers Kalynn Carl and Ashley Rucker also competed in the tournament. Carl, a junior, finished 18th with a total pinfall of 4,884 and missed the top 16 by just six pins. Rucker, a senior, finished with a total pinfall of 4,682.
Lokker and Rucker were both on Junior Team USA for 2013. There are still four spots open for the 2014 squad that will be chosen at a later date.
