JONESBORO,Ark. (ASU) - The Arkansas State University men's cross country team was selected seventh place in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Men's Cross Country Coaches' Preseason Poll, which was released this Thursday (Aug. 29) by the conference office.

A-State, coached by Jim Patchell and Kyle Chandler, received 47 points in the voting by the league's head coaches and was just three points shy of tying sixth-place ULM (50 points) in the nine-team field. UT-Arlington, which is entering its first year of competition in the Sun Belt Conference, earned top billing with 95 points and nine of the 10 first-place votes.

"Our men's team is definitely stronger than last year's team," said Patchell. "We're definitely moving in the right direction and we have a lot of new talent, but we're still very young. Coach (Kyle) Chandler does a great job with our cross country teams and we're lucky to have him on our coaching staff. We're looking forward to getting the season started."

Last season, the Red Wolves were picked 11th in the conference coaches' preseason poll and would finish ninth place at the league's championship meet.

Arkansas State will begin its 2013 season this Saturday (Aug. 31) as the Red Wolves compete in the four-mile Memphis (Tenn.) Twilight Classic. The 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championships will take place Nov. 2 in Troy, Ala., as Troy University will host the event.
