JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) - Arkansas State head football coach Bryan Harsin has announced that six former walk-ons to the Red Wolves football team were awarded full athletic scholarships prior to the start of the 2013 season, which began last week for A-State with a 62-11 victory over UAPB and continues Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Auburn.
The former walk-ons to earn a scholarship this year were junior defensive back Brock Barnhill (Mountain Home, Ark.), junior linebacker Darius Buckley (Memphis, Tenn.), sophomore defensive back Charleston Girley (Pine Bluff, Ark.), junior defensive back Ryan Jacobs (Evans,?Ga.), freshman punter Paul Jones (Ballarat, Australia) and redshirt freshman wide receiver Booker Mays (Pine Bluff, Ark.).
"Hard work and determination brings great rewards, and these guys are an example of that," said Harsin. "I'm extremely proud of every one of them for the positive attitude they bring on a day-to-day basis and their commitment to this football team, so we're excited to award them these scholarships that they've each earned."
While Jones is a true freshman, Barnhill, Buckley, Girley, Jacobs and Mays have all been a part of at least one Sun Belt Conference championship with the Red Wolves and helped lead them to a GoDaddy.com Bowl victory last season. All six saw action in the Red Wolves' 2013 season opener, while Girley got his first career start in the game.
