Shoemaker (7-1, 2.60) needed only 95 pitches for the nine-inning shutout win. He gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five. He also hit a man with a pitch, but didn't allow a Rockhound runner to reach third base for the game.
Shoemaker gave up a first inning single to Adam Heether with two outs and didn't allow another hit until there were two outs in the top of the eighth inning. He retired seven Rockhounds in a row once and retired six in a row twice in the game.
The Travs began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when designated hitter Roberto Lopez hit a one-out single to left field and scored on right fielder Angel Castillo's double down the left-field line to put the Travs ahead 1-0. Castillo advanced to third on the throw home and scored on Clay Fuller's single to center for a two-run lead.
A.J. Griffin (1-1, 5.56) picked up the loss giving up four runs and eight hits in five and two-third innings. He struck out two and walked one.
The Travs added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Gabe Jacobo was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a fly out by Lopez, Castillo hit his second double down the left-field line to advance Jacobo to third base. Jacobo scored on Fuller's groundout to the shortstop, making it a 3-0 Travs' lead. On Griffin's next pitch, catcher Alberto Rosario singled to left field to score Castillo from third to put the Travs up 4-0.
Travs' left fielder Chris Pettit singled to left field off of lefty reliever Fabian Williamson to start the bottom of the eighth inning. Pettit advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored the Travs' fifth run of the game when Jacobo hit a hard liner up the middle that deflected off of the shortstop's glove and skipped into the outfield. Williamson gave up a run in two and one-third innings of relief, surrendering two hits and striking out three.
Lopez, Castillo and Fuller each hit 2 for 4 for the Travs and Fuller added two RBIs. Castillo scored two runs and added an RBI, and Jacobo went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
The Travs attempt to make it four in a row when they play the Rockhounds in the last game of a three-game series on Saturday, July 9, at Dickey-Stephens Park. Righty Garrett Richards (9-1, 3.33) will start for the Travs and lefty Polin Trinidad (2-3, 6.87) starts for the Rockhounds.
Richards got a no decision against Frisco in his last start on July 3. He gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks, and struck out three in seven and a third. Trinidad last pitched against Springfield and got the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking one. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 and gates open at 6:10.
