LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Given that county sheriff is an elected office, law enforcement experience is not a requirement for the job. Officials told THV 11 that newly sworn-in Scott County Sheriff Amie Carpenter should rely on the people her husband Cody put in place for support.
Chris Villines, Executive Director at the Association of Arkansas Counties, thinks Amie Carpenter will have a lot of help in serving the remainder of her husband's term in office.
"They have many family friends that are involved in the operation of the sheriff's office already," said Villines. "So, I feel like she's going to be stepping into a situation where she's got support there."
"I've seen sheriffs before with no law enforcement experience failed badly because they didn't rely on the talents that were around them," said Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington, who knew Sheriff Carpenter and knows his wife.
"We'll be there if she needs anything," said Pennington. "If she will rely on the people that are already on board there in Scott County that Cody put in place to do their jobs... If she will allow those individuals to continue on doing their job and handling their job and for her to be more of an administrative sheriff things should go well."
"There are a lot of lifelines that she's got out there to use in this position," said Villines. "She will have to lean on those who are already in office that know what they're doing. I think this is the right move for Scott County to heal and to move forward."
Sheriff Pennington also said Carpenter will have the full support of all the other sheriffs around the state of Arkansas, and that they will do whatever they can to help her while she's in office.
"Any police agency, the Arkansas Game & Fish--all these resources that are out there and available for her," said Pennington. "They'll willingly come forward and put it on the plate for her and be there for her, and I know her well enough that she won't be bashful. If she needs something she will definitely ask, and that's a good thing."
