LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Health experts say there are people who do everything right when it comes to trying to lose weight, but they just can't seem to shed the extra pounds.
In those cases, many physicians recommend bariatric surgery.
Jon Fitzgerald, an Arkansas family man, loves doing things with his daughter and sons. That wasn't always possible.
"When we lived in Texas, we were next to Six Flags and we'd take the kids down there, but I couldn't ride the rides with them because I couldn't fit in the rides," says Fitzgerald.
Part of Fitzgerald's battles was the fact that he's a chef. He had tried every diet with no luck. He did some research, and decided to have lap-band surgery.
Dr. Fuller, a bariatric surgeon, says, "The lap-band is a soft adjustable device that is wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach. So, at the end of the day, there are less calories consumed and successful weight loss is achieved."
Fitzgerald says the weight loss happened immediately, just as Dr. Fuller said it would. "With appropriate diet and exercise, we expect immediate weight loss at approximately one pound a week."
Fitzgerald got his lap-band two years ago and has managed to maintain his weight. The thing about lap-bands is that it is a non-invasive procedure and the band is adjustable.
"I wish I'd done it 20 years ago," says Fitzgerald.
