LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Here is a great way to get into the holiday spirit by making homemade cookies and frosting!

Sam Parsley with Cakes By Sam will join Ashley and Meredith to demonstrate!

Get in the holiday spirit with a batch of these kid-friendly Christmas cookies. Decorate them as you please - add some sprinkles or cinnamon balls to the frosting, or experiment with different colors.

    For the frosting:
    • One 32-ounce bag powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract
    • 3/4 cup shortening
    • 2-3 drops food coloring

    For the cookies:
    • 1 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1 cup butter
    • 2 tablespoons sour cream
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 3 1/2 cup flour, plus more for rolling
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

    For the frosting:
In a bowl, mix the first 3 ingredients together until smooth. Add hot water until the desired consistency is achieved. Separate into small bowls and add food coloring. Set aside.

    For the cookies:
In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed for about 1 minute. Add the remaining ingredients, and mix until well incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, roll out the dough on a lightly floured board until it is ¼-inch-thick, and cut out with your favorite shaped Christmas cookie cutters.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Transfer the cookies to the sheet and place in the oven. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and frost the cookies. Serve.
