LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Starting this week, Arkansas Business is debuting a new list that tracks the highest paid non-profit employees.

These figures are included in all nonprofits' Form 990s, which are on file with the IRS and subject to public inspection under the Freedom of Information Act.

Here are just a few who made the list:

No. 1: Russ Harrington, CEO of Baptist Health, making a little more than $1 million.

No. 2: Robert Atkinson, Former President and CEO of Jefferson Hospital Association in Pine Bluff, making $902,000.

In all, 104 employees were paid more than $300,000, and all but six of those worked for nonprofit in health care.

In fact, you have to get down to No. 20 on the list before you find someone outside the medical field -- that person is Dan Bacigalupi, the Executive Director of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. His total compensation is a little more than $597,000 per year.

A look at the numbers also shows that they're not more richly compensated than executives of the state's publicly traded companies.

These nonprofit don't pay federal income tax, and so what they pay employees is regulated by the IRS. If they determine an employee is overpaid, it's in their power to have that excess repaid and levy a penalty.
