TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) -- The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission is looking for the person who killed an alligator that was found with its head and tail missing.
Commission Capt. Jackie Runion said the reptile was found last week on the Red River about one mile north of the Arkansas-Louisiana border. He told the Texarkana Gazette that he believes it was shot to death.
Runion said the alligator was estimated to be 11 feet long and about 60 years old and said he believes the person who has the head "is probably showing it off."
Alligators are protected as a threatened species, although the commission issues about three dozen hunting permits for the reptile.
