FORT SMITH, Ark. (KTHV) -- Police said a Fort Smith officer shot a man because he thought he had a gun, but it turns out that the man was unarmed. Now the officer is on administrative leave.
As the investigation continues, Officer Brandon Djordjevic has been placed on paid administrative leave. Police said the shooting happened after a party at the Fifth Seasons Inn on Waldron Road.
KFSM reported that Djordjevic tried to stop Anthony Price from leaving, but instead of stopping, Price tried to drive off. That's when the officer dove in the car and tried to put it in park.
Djordjevic said he thought Price was reaching for a gun, so he shot him once in the leg.
Price has been treated and released from the hospital. He's now held without bond at the Sebastian County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, drug possession and parole violation.
