JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - The city of Jacksonville has officially petitioned to leave the Pulaski County School District.

The Jacksonville Education Foundation presented a petition to the Arkansas State Board of Education Monday, declaring that Jacksonville meets the requirements to form an independent school district. With 2,079 signatures -- 200 more than needed -- the board accepted their petition.

"The next step is for the state board to ask for the attorney general for an opinion on whether what the state is doing here will negatively impact the desegregation efforts of the Pulaski County Special School District," said Patrick Wilson Attorney for the Jacksonville Education Foundation and the Education Corp.

According to their study, Wilson said the new district will not negatively impact desegregation, but they'll wait to get the judge's approval.
