    Little Rock News:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The Little Rock School District board voted Thursday on whether to turn Geyer Springs Elementary School into an academy only for gifted and talented children.

After deliberating for 4 hours, option B passed unanimously. Under option B, the school will only serve grades three through five as "gifted and talented".

New students, who would normally be assigned there, will attend Bale Stephens or Franklin Elementary, but for now the students who are already there will transition into the gifted and talented certified material.

"All the children should have options, not just the ones who are ... on an intellectual level of 5th grade reading when they're in the second grade," said Latoya Gilliam, a parent.

"We can learn things that we can take to other schools and benefit students in a much broader way," said Greg Adams, a school board member.

Adams said the district should offer parents options to remain competitive. He said the goal it to keep students in the district.

"For a long time it seems like we've been fighting, fighting, fighting against negative things and when the school district decided to propose this High Ability Academy for out neighborhood, I thought it was a great idea," said Kathy Kline, a neighbor.
