MARKED TREE, Ark. (AP) - A special election has been scheduled for voters in Marked Tree to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Wayne Nichols, who died earlier this month.
The filing period runs from May 20 until May 28 for the Aug. 13 election. The Jonesboro Sun reports the winner of the election can run for a new four-year term in November 2014.
Voting will be held Aug. 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Arkansas State University-Newport campus in Marked Tree on U.S. 63.
Nichols died May 5. He was in his first term as Marked Tree's mayor and previously served for six years in the Arkansas House of Representatives.
