Dunn, of Dover, has pleaded not guilty to capital murder for the 2005 killing of Nona Dirksmeyer. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Pope County Circuit Court in Russellville on Tuesday in advance of an April 13 trial.
Dunn's lawyers say an exam at the State Hospital would only be to determine whether Dunn is competent to be tried. They also note that prosecutors would have access to what Dunn says to examiners. Having the exam would enable defense lawyers to better defend Dunn if there is a penalty phase to determine whether he should be executed or given life in prison.
Dirksmeyer was found bludgeoned to death in her apartment on Dec. 15, 2005.
Her boyfriend, Kevin Jones, was charged but a jury found him not guilty. Special prosecutor Jack McQuary says he believes that Jones did not kill Dirksmeyer.
