PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) - The defense will continue presenting its case in the capital murder trial of a man accused of killing a Trumann police officer last year.

More testimony is expected Wednesday in the trial of Jerry Lard, who is accused of killing Officer Jonathan Schmidt in 2011.

On Tuesday, the prosecution rested its case after calling chief medical examiner, Dr. Charles Kokes, to the witness stand. According to the Jonesboro Sun, Kokes said the bullet that killed Schmidt traveled through his jaw, tongue and teeth and eventually severed his carotid artery.

Kokes said once the artery was severed, Schmidt's ability to breathe was hampered.

Defense attorneys say Lard suffers from a mental disease or defect due to childhood abuse and drugs. A witness testified about the effects of methamphetamine on the brain.
