    Sports News:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Jackson Sun) - Gannett sister station Jackson Sun has reported that ASU football player Markel Owens is dead following a Wednesday night shooting in Jackson, Tenn.

The station said the ASU football player is one of two men dead after the shooting at 770 Walker Road around 9:30.

The Jacksonville, Tennessee Police Department said in a press release Owens, 21, and Johnny Shivers, 36, are the two victims.

A 37-year-old woman, who was Shivers' wife and Owens' mother, was also shot. She was treated and released Wednesday night from Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

Police believe the shooting occurred during a home invasion robbery. Investigators believe two gunman rushed Shivers as he was arriving home. The gunman struggled with Shivers and Owens when the two were shot.

Police said they believe Shiver was targeted. They said the gunman made off with a large amount of money, and investigators found a large amount of marijuana inside the apartment.

While the motive remains under investigation, police believe the robbers had prior knowledge of the drugs and/or cash inside the apartment.

In addition, several ASU news websites have also confirmed Owens' death. The Arkansas State football team's official Twitter account @RedWolvesFBall posted the following tweet: "Today is a tough day for the Red Wolves family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Markel Owens' family and friends at this difficult time."

Owens is a Jackson native and graduated from Liberty Technology Magnet High School in 2010.
