When police arrived, there were several people standing in the street.
Carroll was not breathing and was unresponsive. Carroll was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County coroner. It appears Carroll died of the result of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.
When Carroll was turned over, the officers discovered a holstered black semi-automatic firearm in his waistline. It was identified as a Lorcin .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun. The weapon did not appear to have been fired and is not considered to be the weapon used to kill him. No other weapons were found at the scene.
Detectives located an area resident who said he was asleep when he heard several gun shots and called 911. He said he went outside and saw a body lying in the road and he called 911 again.
The suspect has yet to be identified and is considered armed and dangerous. The assailant's physical description is a black male, approximately 5'7 and weighing around 175 pounds. The only distinguishing characteristic is that he reportedly has several tattoos.
