UNDATED (CNN) -- Today's food holiday will leave you spinning - December 7 is National Cotton Candy Day!

It's amazing what air can do! Use a small amount of sugar, pump up the volume and stick your face in a giant cloud of delicious, melt-in-your-mouth cotton candy.

Cotton candy first made its appearance in the early 1900s, and oddly enough, the spun sugar treat was invented by a dentist, William Morrison, and a confectioner, John C. Wharton. The two marketed their creation as "fairy floss" at the 1904 World's Fair. It was later renamed cotton candy in the 1920s.It's easy enough to make cotton candy if you've got the right machine. Granulated sugar is poured into a small bowl where heaters melt it and squeeze it through tiny holes. As the melted sugar solidifies again in mid-air, it gets caught around the spinning head in the bowl. Then, the "cotton" begins to build up around the rim.

If you're not afraid of getting into a sticky kitchen situation, try making your own cotton candy the old-fashioned way. Or you can track down a cotton candy maker at your local home goods store for a fun treat.

Of course, if the circus is in town and your holiday company is driving you crazy, it might be a good idea to take everyone out for some cotton candy too.
