ENID, Okla. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team broke single-game Great American Conference Championship Tournament records in runs and hits in a 19-7 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark. The Boll Weevils strung together 19 runs off 20 hits for the lop-sided victory. It was the second straight game for UAM to reach the 20-hit barrier. The team closed out the regular season with 20 hits in an 11-3 win over Southern Arkansas last Sunday. The first-round win also improves UAM to 30-18 overall this season, marking just the third 30-win season in program history. Seven of the nine UAM starters totaled at least two hits in the win, led by junior Ben Agredano's 4-for-5 performance at the plate with two runs batted in and four runs scored. Senior Taylor Eaves, junior Chad Miller and junior Tyler Caruthers all had three hits, while junior D'Marco Poindexter, senior Danny Loya and junior Alex Lang all added two hits in the win.
After allowing one SWOSU in the first inning, UAM answered with three runs in the top of the second inning on RBI singles from Poindexter and Caruthers, as well as an RBI sac bunt from Lang. UAM took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third on a solo-homerun from Eaves to lead off the inning.
SWOSU (31-15) tied the game at 4-runs reach in the bottom of the third on a three-run triple from Bryce Stout.
The Boll Weevils regained the lead for the final time with a seven-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Loya, which was followed by an RBI double from Miller.
The Bulldogs finalized their scoring over the next two innings on a two-run homerun from Chris Faulkner in the fifth and an RBI single from Stout in the fifth. UAM got back on the board in the seventh on an RBI single from Caruthers. The Weevils strung together three-straight run-producing at bats in the eighth for three runs, and broke the tournament records for runs and hits with four runs off three hits in the ninth, including an RBI double from Caruthers.
UAM totaled seven extra-base hits in Saturday's win over SWOSU.
Junior Kade Garlington (3-0) earned the win in relief after allowing just one run off five hits with three strikeouts and just one walk in the final five innings. Shane Martin (11-2) suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs (six earned) off eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the first 4.1 innings.
The Boll Weevils advance into the GAC tournament winner's bracket to face either No. 3 seed Arkansas Tech or No. 4 seed Henderson State on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
