A southwest Arkansas doctor is to begin a four and a half year prison sentence Wednesday in Texas in a Medicare fraud case.
Dr. Patrick Antoon Sr. was convicted, along with others, in a scam involving motorized wheelchairs. Federal court documents in Texas indicate he will serve his sentence at La Tuna, a low-security prison about 12 miles north of El Paso.
Besides the prison sentence, Antoon also was ordered to pay $432,000 in restitution. Antoon is a family practice doctor who ran the Magnolia Urgent Care and Family Clinic.
Prosecutors say the defendants conspired to defraud the government of about $12 million. Antoon was found guilty of Medicare fraud, falsifying office records and obstructing an investigation.
Prosecutors say Antoon talked elderly patients into unnecessarily seeking motorized wheelchairs, paid for with government money. The scheme included alleged kickbacks from wheelchair supplier Universal Health Services.
