Environmentalists in Arkansas consider the recently concluded legislative session a moderate success, but note there are still improvements to be made.
Of the 13 issues backed by the Arkansas Sierra Club, five were passed and signed into law by Governor Beebe. But four of the six bills the group opposed also were signed into law.
One issue praised by the group was the creation of a commission on global warming.
That bill was introduced by Representative Kathy Webb, a Democrat from Little Rock. It creates a 20-member commission to study global-warming issues. The commission also will develop a plan to reduce pollutants to contribute to global warming.
Webb says that the creation of the commission may be viewed in the future as one of the most important things the Legislature accomplished in the session.
