    Check It Out: Natural 'glow in the dark' fish

    (CNN) -- Check out these photos of glow-in-the-dark fish!

    This isn't a lighting trick or some product of genetic engineering. Researchers with the American Museum of Natural History released these photographs as part of a study of naturally glowing fish species released this week.

    Biologists identified about 180 varieties of fish that can create their own light shows! It's called "bioflourescence" and it happens when an organism absorbs blue light, transforms it and emits it as another color.

    Scientists say that animals like corals, jellyfish and butterflies, and even a few parrots have also been known to glow in the dark.
