LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Most people always have enough life jackets on their boats, but people are encouraged to wear the jacket even if their near the water.
The uncertainty of what can happen while boating has put US Army Corp of Engineers to work-with a vest! US Army Corps of Engineers kicked off Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day, and it was a sure way to catch your attention. Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day took place Friday for the very first time.
Wearing the gear in public raises awareness for boater safety. Some corp members wore the life jackets out to lunch Friday, raising eyebrows at first but certainly spreading the message.
Last year there were 15 fatalities in the Little Rock district of lakes. Since 2000, 184 people have drown in the lakes and John Balgavy, chief operations for Little Rock District of US Army Corps engineers, said about 90 percent of those people died because they didn't wear life jackets. Now, there are all types of vests to stay safe and comfortable.
So, make sure life jackets are on that list of things to grab on the way to the lake this summer.
