Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Dwayne Davis and Jerrold Brooks tallied 13
points each as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles coasted to a 63-52 victory over
the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the second round of the 2013 National
Invitational Tournament at Reed Green Coliseum.
Jonathan Mills and Rashard McGill chipped in 10 points each for the Golden
Eagles (27-9), who will advance to take on the BYU Cougars in the next round.
Mills and McGill also accounted for eight rebounds each in the win.
Raheem Appleby pumped in 17 points for Louisiana Tech (27-7) as it lost four
of its last five games to conclude its 2012-13 season. Alex Hamilton chipped
in 15 points and six assists in the setback.
USM took a 35-27 lead into the break after it hit on 48.4 percent of its field
goal tries in the first half. The hosts missed all four of their attempts from
beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes, but still held an edge by holding
the Bulldogs to 36.7 percent efficiency from the floor.
Davis had six points and the same numbers of rebounds after the break while
Appleby scored 14 of the Bulldogs' 25 second half points. The Golden Eagles
continued to struggle from beyond the arc, making just 1-of-11, but they
outscored the visitors, 20-8, in the break to hang on for the win.
USM made up for its poor shooting from long range by outrebounding Louisiana
Tech, 41-34, and also by holding a 44-22 edge in points in the paint.
