    Several ASU athletes qualify for NCAA west prelims

    JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) - The Arkansas State University outdoor track and field teams, who are idle this weekend in preparation for the upcoming 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, continue to turn unproductive team and individual performances this spring.

    The Red Wolves, under the direction of second-year ASU head coach Jim Patchell, are featured among the top 15 teams in both the women's and men's NCAA Division I South Central Region rankings as of April 30th. The rankings, which are conducted through the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), presently list the A-State women's team ninth in the regional computer rankings with a 230.50 team score. The ASU men's squad has moved up one place into 10th as the Red Wolves compiled a 204.97 team total.

    Arkansas State, which is gearing up for its final regular outdoor season meet next weekend (May 10-12) at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Miramar, Fla., has tentatively qualified a combined 13 student-athletes in a combined 15 events to date for participation in the 2013 NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round to be held May 23-25 at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas

    The top 48 competitors in each individual event and the top 24 relay teams with the best times qualify for the prelims. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance for participation in the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are scheduled for June 5-8 at the University of Oregon's legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

    To date, the A-State women's squad tentatively has six athletes qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims in eight various events. On the men's side, the Red Wolves currently have seven individuals who are presently among the top 48 qualifiers and would compete in a combined nine events.

    A-State will tentatively be represented in the following NCAA West Prelim events to date -- Women - 100-meters, 200-meters, 100-meter hurdles, 10,000-meters, hammer throw, triple jump, and pole vault; Men - 200-meters, 400-meters, 110-meter hurdles, triple jump, high jump, shot put, hammer throw, and decathlon.
