Jonesboro, Ark. (A-State) - Playing host to the Lady Red Wolf Classic, the Arkansas State women's golf team shot a final-round 314 Tuesday in rainy weather conditions at Sage Meadows Country Club to finish its home tournament in third place with a combined 901.
The Red Wolves were led by two players claiming top-10 finishes, including freshman Maci Arrington and sophomore Abi Laker. Arrington picked up a season-best fourth-place finish, while Laker ended the two-day tournament tied for eighth place to collect her second top-10 finish of the year.
A-State shot a 301 and 286 yesterday for the first and second rounds, respectively, to put in second place, but Western Kentucky shot a final-round 296 that pushed it to second place in the final standings while dropping the Red Wolves to third at the same time. Louisiana-Monroe claimed the tournament championship with an 880 and was followed by the Hilltoppers with an 894.
"Today played tough out there with the weather conditions, but when you have another team shooting good scores it makes you realize that we need to play tougher," said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. "This was a very strong field, and I'm excited that we gained great experience. I'm proud of our three seniors, and I truly look forward to one more semester with them. All three of them have been dedicated to this team and showed improvements in their game these last three years."
A-State had nine players competing in the tournament, including five that comprised a "red team" and four that made up a "black team." The black team finished seventh with a combined 996, including a final-round 344.
Four of the five players competing for Arkansas State's red team shot a final-round 79 on Tuesday, including Arrington and Laker. Arrington finished with a 219 total, while Laker scored a 225. Also competing for the red team, Marie Couffignal finished tied for 11th place with a 227, Megan Garland 15th with a 231 and Courtney Manning tied for 20th with a 236.
Playing as part of the Red Wolves' black squad, Endsley Evans tied for 24th place with a 241, Libby Croom tied for 28th with a 247, Clara Tefteller 30th with a 250 and Anna Flanrey tied for 33rd with a 258.
