El Paso, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - John Bohannon scored 17 points and ripped
down 15 rebounds for the Texas-El Paso Miners, who defeated the Denver
Pioneers, 60-54, in double overtime at the Don Haskins Center as part of the
Sun Bowl Invitational.
C.J. Cooper added 15 points for UTEP (10-5), which has won five straight.
Cedrick Lang finished with 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench and
Vince Hunter tallied 10 boards.
Cam Griffin came through with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Denver (6-7).
Marcus Byrd chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench and Jalen
Love tacked on 10 points.
A low-scoring first half ended with the Miners leading, 20-14. They knocked
down only 23.8 percent of their field goal attempts, but hit 9-of-14 from the
free-throw line and held the Pioneers to just 21.4 percent shooting.
Both teams improved in the second half, with UTEP shooting 38.1 percent and
Denver at 37.5 percent. A 3-pointer from Love and a pair of free-throws from
Griffin with 1:20 to play pushed Denver to a 46-44 lead but Cooper got two
free-throws of his own in the final minute to force overtime.
Neither team had much success in the first extra session, with each scoring
just three points and combining to connect on 1-of-7 from the floor.
The Miners were trailing, 54-51 with 3:14 to play in the second overtime but
they then ripped off a 9-0 run to close out the game and the victory.
