NEW ORLEANS, La. (A-State) - The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) has recognized Arkansas State University senior Sharika Nelvis as the Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for this week (Jan. 22) and represents the second consecutive week in which the A-State standout has earned the conference's weekly award.
Nelvis, who earned league weekly recognition a week ago (Jan. 15), won the 60-meter hurdles at this past weekend's (Jan. 17-18) Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky., by clocking an 8.15 time to post the event's second-fastest time nationally to date this season.
The two-time (2012-13) U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Second-Team All-America sprinter/hurdler also recorded a 24.29 time to capture seventh place in the meet's 200-meter dash. She is presently tied for 34th place on the top NCAA Division I indoor qualifying performances list in the 200 meters this season.
Nelvis' times in those two events at the Kentucky Invitational both presently represent the conference's top performances for this 2014 indoor season.
A three-time (2011-13) All-SBC First-Team performer in indoor track, Nelvis has received conference weekly laurels a combined nine times for the indoor and outdoor seasons during her A-State career.
The Red Wolves will host the 2014 A-State Invitational this Friday (Jan. 24) inside the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark. The annual non-scoring meet is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. (CT) with the field events.
