MONTICELLO, Ark. (UAM) - Southern Nazarene held the University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team to just three points in a span of nearly 10 minutes during the second half to defeat the Boll Weevils by a final score of 66-59 on Saturday in Monticello.
UAM (15-9, 8-8 Great American Conference) rallied to take an eight-point lead with 13:21 remaining in the second half on a layup from senior Brandon Wilson, but SNU answered with a 19-3 run over the next 10 minutes to take an eight-point lead with just under six minutes remaining in regulation. UAM ended that run with a jumper from senior Jared Harrison with 3:36 left on the clock to pull the deficit down to six points.
UAM got to within three points on a steal and a fast break layup by Sharif Hudson with 1:37 remaining, but SNU's Fransisco nailed a three-pointer on the other end to deny any further chances of a UAM comeback.
SNU (12-10, 10-6 GAC) led for the majority of the first half, save a 6-0 run for UAM to take a four-point lead with 4:10 remaining before halftime on a layup from junior Kenric McCants.
The Storm led 32-30 at halftime after leading by as much as seven points in the first 20 minutes.
The Weevils finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field (24-for-54), 21 percent on three-pointers (2-for-14) and 42 percent on foul shots (8-for-19). SNU shot 54 percent from the field (23-for-43), 44 percent on three-pointers (8-for-18) and 57 percent on foul shots (12-for-21).
UAM had four scorers reach double-digits, led by Brandon Wilson's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Harrison had 14, senior Brandon Sims had 13 and Hudson finished with 10.
SNU's C.J. Smith led all scorers with 21 points.
The Weevils are back in action next Thursday night (Feb. 20) at home against Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
