RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (GAC) - The Great American Conference women's golf coaches have selected Arkansas Tech as the preseason favorites to win the 2013 conference championship, the league office announced on Thursday.
The Golden Suns placed second at last year's GAC Championship. Rebecka Surtevall captured the league's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. She won the GAC Championship with a then-school record three-round score of 232. She bettered that mark by shooting a 228 at the NCAA Division II Super Region 4 Championship.
Southwestern Oklahoma State received five first-place votes but took second in the poll. The Lady Bulldogs won the Drury Fall Shootout in September and Ana Gomez claimed medalist honors at that event. The Lady Bulldogs finished in the top six in all four of their fall events.
Harding placed third in the preseason poll. The Lady Bisons won the 2012 GAC Championship and return their top four finishers from that event. Becca Godman (second), Emily Plyler (tied for third), Brittany Marquez (fifth) and Soyun Kim (seventh) led Harding at that event.
Henderson State took fourth in the poll followed by East Central. The Lady Reddies closed the fall season with a third-place showing at its HSU Lady Reddie Invitational. East Central finished its fall schedule with a fourth-place showing at that same event.
Arkansas-Monticello, Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist rounded out the poll. Coaches did not include provisional members Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene in the preseason ballot.
The spring season opens on Saturday with Southwestern Oklahoma State participating at the Tusculum Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C. and UAM playing in the Jack Brown Memorial Tournament in Laredo, Texas. GAC Championship returns to Hot Springs, Ark. and the Hot Springs Country Club. The Championship will take place from April 14-16.
